Hymn 102: Why men invoke Indra

Rişhi: Kutsa Angirasa

 

MANTRA (1.102.1): GODS DELIGHT INDRA

 

To you who are mighty I address this excellent hymn,

For your understanding hath been gratified by my praise. The Gods delight Indra,

The conqueror of foes, with their luminous might,

So that he bestows on all the powers of prosperity and bounty.

 

imām te dhiyam prabhare maho mahīm

this, to you, hymn, address, mighty one, excellent,

asya stotre dhişhaņā yat ta ānaje,

my, hymn or praise, understanding, ., to you, gratified,

tam utsave cha prasave cha sāsahim

him, prosperity, and, successive strengths, and, conqueror (of foes),

indram devāsaĥ shavasa amadan anu.

Indra, all Gods, luminous might, delighted, successively.

 

Details:

prasave: the continuous shower of the powers of Light and Might, translated as bounty here.

 


MANTRA (1.102.2): INDRA MAKES US HAVE FAITH IN THE DIVINE WORKINGS

 

The seven rivers proclaim his glory;

Heaven, the midworld and the earth are his handsome body or form;

O Indra, to make us experience the three worlds and have faith (in the laws),

The sun and moon revolve continuously.

 

asya shravo nadyaĥ sapta bibhrati

his, glory, rivers, seven, proclaim,

dyāvākşhāmā pŗthivī darshatam vapuĥ,

heaven and earth, th wide midworld, handsome, body or form,

asme sūryāchandramasa abhichakşhe shradhde

For us, the sun and moon, we may see, faith,

kam indra charato vitarturam.

., Indra, perform, revolution.

 

Details:

The three worlds constitute the form or body of Indra. The Sun and Moon by performing the tasks of giving us illumination continuously make us have faith in the Laws and the Power of Indra.

Seven rivers: The seven streams of Light and Force representing the energies of the seven worlds such as bhūĥ (earth).

 


MANTRA (1.102.3): PRAISED OFTEN IN OUR MINDS

 

O Maghavan, direct your car to bring us felicities,

The same victorious car which we praise successively in battles;

O Indra, who is praised often in our minds,

Grant happiness to us who long for you, O Maghavan.

 

tam smā ratham maghavan prāva sātaye

that,., car, Indra, direct, for (bringing us) felicities,

jaitram yam te anumadāma sangame,

victorious, which, your, successively laud, in our encounters (with foe),

ājā na indra manasā puruşhţuta

battles, us, Indra, by our mind, much-praised,

tvāyadbhyo maghavan sharma yachcha naĥ.

who long for you, Maghavan, happiness, give, us.

 


MANTRA (1.102.4): MAKE THE GOAL EASY FOR US TO REACH

 

O Indra, with you for our friend, may we be victorious against the coverers;

May we hold high our portions or the paths in every yajňa;

Make our goal easy to reach;

O Maghavan, break down the vigour of our foes.

 

vayam jayema tvayā yujā vŗtam

we, win, with your (help), yoked (to you), the coverers,

asmākam amsham udavā bharebhare,

our, portions, hold high or protect, in yajňa and yajňa,

asmabhyam indra varivaĥsugam kŗdhi

our, Indra, goal, easy, do,

pra shatrūņām maghvan vŗşhņyā ruja.

., foes, Maghavan, vigour, breakdown.

 

Details:

In the journey of the rişhi there are many planes or parts. The prayer is that Indra should keep the path free from the coverers and hold it high or clear for the easy passage

vŗtam: coverer of knowledge, one of vŗtrās.

amsha: portion or part of journey or goal.

 


MANTRA (1.102.5): YOUR ONE-POINTED MIND

 

In diverse ways, these lauders invoke you

For the protection of the peoples, O holder of riches;

Indra ascend the car for making us get the wealth,

For your one-pointed mind is set for victory.

 

nānā hi tvā havamānā janā

diverse, ., you, invoke, peoples,

ime dhanānām dhartaĥ avasā vipinyavaĥ,

these, wealth, holders of, for protection, laudators,

asmākam smā ratham ātişhţha sātaye

our, this, car, ascent, for (attainment of) wealth,

jaitram hi indra nibhŗtam manaĥ tava.

victorious, ., Indra, fixed or stable, mind, yours.

 

Details:

Your mind is fixed on the idea of getting the wealth of knowledge and power hidden by the coverers and distributing it to the humans.

 


MANTRA (1.102.6): YOUR ARMS WIN KNOWLEDGE

 

Your arms win the knowledge, O boundless of will;

You offer thousand fold protection from the binders in act and act;

Initiator of battles and unequalled, Indra is an exemplar of might;

Hence desirous of wealth, men invoke you in various ways.

 

yojitā bāhū amitakratuĥ simaĥ

wins the knowledge, (your) arms, boundless in will, those who bind,

karmankarman shatamūtiĥ khajankaraĥ,

in act and acts, (hundred fold protection) author of battles,

akalpa indraĥ pratimānam ojasa

unequalled or sole, Indra, exemplar, might,

athā janā, vihvayante sişhāsavaĥ.

thus, people, invoke variously, desirous of wealth.

 

Details:

simaĥ: binders, those who psychologically prevent us from attaining perfection, the enemies of yajňa who want to bind the humans to their weaknesses; S. translates simaĥas noble, quoting a word which occurs only once in Shukla Yajur Veda.

 


MANTRA (1.102.7): OUR PRAISE BRINGS TO LIGHT YOUR VAST THOUGT

 

O Maghavan, your glory exceeds hundred fold and more,

And thousand fold among active persons;

Our praise brings to light your vast thought;

Later, you destroy the Vŗtrās, O tearer of forts.

 

ut te shatān maghavan ut cha bhūyasa

., your, hundred fold, Maghavan, ., and, more or many,

ut sahasrāt ririche kŗşhţişhu shravaĥ,

., thousand fold, exceeds, among active persons, fame,

amātram tvā dişhaņā titvişhe

signless or limitness, yours, thought or praise, brings to light,

mahi adhā vŗtrāņi jighnase purandara.

vast, later, vŗtrās, destroyest, tears of cities or forts (of foes),

 

Details:

ut ririche: exceeds.

amātram: free of distinguishing sign, limitless.

purandara: tearer of cities or forts; forts are subtle structures in the forces of ignorance. puri in Veda is not the city of human beings.

 


MANTRA (1.102.8): YOU SUSTAIN THE THREE EARTHS

 

You are the exemplar of strength sustaining the three worlds;

O lord of men, you are the three lights of the three worlds;

You carry this world effortlessly;

Indra, from your birth in ancient times, you have been without a rival.

 

trivişhţidhātu pratimānam ojasaĥ

the sustaining the three, exemplar or representative, strength,

tisro bhūmī nŗpate trīņi rochanā

three, earths or worlds, lord of men, three, eyes or lights,

ati idam vishvam bhuvanam vavakşhitha

excessive, this, world, world, carry,

ashatruĥ indra januşhā sanāt asi

with no enemies, Indra, since birth, from ancient times, one.

 

Details:

The three worlds trivişhţi are the worlds of matter, life-force, and mind, bhūĥ, bhuvaĥand svaĥ. The three lights or luminaries in the second line of translation are the three deities, Agni, Vāyu and Ąditya, presiding over the three worlds.

 


MANTRA (1.102.9): CAR UPROOTS FOES

 

We invoke the foremost among the Gods;

You are the subduer of enemies in battle;

At the time of battle, may Indra place in front of us this car which is

Agile, impetuous and capable of uprooting the foes for the birth of knowledge.

 

tvām deveşhu prathamam havāmahe

you, among the God, first, invoke,

tvam babhūtha pŗtanāsu sāsahiĥ,

you, are, in battles, subduer,

sa imam naĥkārum upamanyum

he, this, to us, capable or agile, impetuous,

udbhidam indraĥkŗņotu prasave ratham puraĥ

uprooting the foes, Indra, place, for obtaining knowledge, car, in front,

 

Details:

prasave: at the time of the battle which gives birth to knowledge and power.

 


MANTRA (1.102.10): WE SHARPEN YOU IN BATTLES

 

You conquer the wealth and withhold it not (from us);

O Maghavan, we sharpen you,

Mighty one, in battles, small or big, for our protection;

Do you inspire us in our invocations, O Indra.

 

tvam jigetha na dhanā rurodhitha

you, conquer, for us, wealth, and not hold it back,

arbheşhu ājā maghavan mahatsu cha,

small, battles, Maghavan, great, and,

tvām ugram avase samshishīmasi

you, mighty one, for our protection, ., (we) sharpen (you),

athā nah indra havaneşhu chodaya.

later, we, Indra, in our invocations, impel us.

 


MANTRA (1.102.11): MAY INDRA BE OUR SPOKES PERSON

 

May Indra guide our speech for ever;

May we be always straightforward and enjoy opulence;

May that be protected for us by Mitra, Varuņa,

Aditi, waters, earth and heaven.
