Hymn 29: GIVE THE LIGHT AND MIGHT EVEN TO US, THE COMMONERS

Rişhi: Shunaĥshepaĥ Ajīgarti

 

MANTRA (1.29.1): WE DEVOTEES ARE COMMONERS

O truth, drinker of Soma,

Even though we are as if common,

Make us special among the rays of light,

The life-energies and the thousand fold auspiciousness, O opulent Indra.

 

yatchit hi satya somapā

even though, ., truth, O Soma-drinker,

anāshastā iva smasi;

common or not excellent, like, are,

a tū na indra shamsaya goşhu

., ., us, Indra, make us celebrated, rays of light,

ashveşhu shubhrişhu sahasreşhu tuvīmagha.

life-energies, auspiciousness, thousand, O many-treasured one.

 

Details:

satya: Truth. This appellation is given to Indra since he is formed completely by the Supreme Truth.

goşhu: Rays of Light.

ashveşhu: Life-energies (steed-forces).

 


MANTRA (1.29.2): ALL-CAPABLE IS YOUR ACTION

 

O auspicious - faced, lord of plenitudes and the

Strong one, all-capable is your action;

Make us special among the rays of light,

The life-energies and thousand fold auspiciousness, O opulent Indra.

 

shiprin vājānām pate

one with beautiful jaw, plenitudes, lord of,

shachīvaĥ tava damsanā

strong one, your, forceful or all-capable,

a tū na indra shamsaya goşhu

., ., us, Indra, make us celebrated, rays of light.

ashveşhu shubhrişhu sahasreşhu tuvīmagha.

 

Details:

shiprin: literally a jaw; face. Gods have forms which can be perceived by our subtle senses.

 


MANTRA (1.29.3): LET THE DUALITIES SLEEP

 

Make the dualities sleep;

Let them sleep without awakening.

Make us special among the rays of light,

The life-energies and the thousand fold auspiciousness, O opulent Indra.

 

ni şhvāpayā mithūdŗshā

well, make them asleep, dualities,

sastām abudhyamāne;

may go to sleep, without awakening,

ā tū na indra shamsaya goşhu

., ., us, Indra, make us celebrated, rays of light,

ashveşhu shubhrişhu sahasreşhu tuvīmagha.

 

Details:

mithu: Vedic form of mithuna, couple.

 


MANTRA (1.29.4): MAY THE GIVERS BE AWAKE

 

May the non-givers be asleep;

May the givers be awake, O brave one.

Make us special among the rays of light,

The life-energies and the thousand fold auspiciousness, O opulent Indra.

 

sasantu tyā arātayo

become asleep, those unseen, non-givers,

bodhantu shūra rātayaĥ;

may awake, O brave one, givers,

a tū na indra shamsaya goşhu

., ., us, Indra, make us celebrated, rays of light,

ashveşhu shubhrişhu sahasreşhu tuvīmagha.

 

Details:

non-givers: They are the titans or their followers who do not give freely to others. Even if they give, they place restrictions. These persons are averse to the yajňa which is a collaborative activity.

tyā: those unseen by us even though they may exist.

bodhāntu: awake, be aware or conscious.

 


MANTRA (1.29.5): DISCORDANT SPEECH

 

O Indra, destroy this ass

Who praises you with discordant speech.

Make us special among the rays of light,

The life-energies and the thousand fold auspiciousness, O opulent Indra.

 

sam indra gardabham mŗņa

well, Indra, an ass, destroy,

nuvantam pāpaya amuyā;

praising you, with evil or sin, with this speech,

ā tū na indra shamsaya goşhu

., ., us, Indra, make us celebrated, rays of light,

ashveşhu shubhrişhu sahasreşhu tuvīmagha.

 

Details:

nuvantam pāpaya: praising you with evil speech.

 


MANTRA (1.29.6): EVIL FORCES

 

May the wild reptile fall,

Far on the forest along with the(unfavourable) wind;

Make us special among the rays of light,

The life-energies and the thousand fold auspiciousness, O opulent Indra.

 

patāti kundŗņāchyā

fall, a wild reptile,

dūram vāto vanāt adhi;

far, wind from the forest, beyond, .,

ā tū na indra shamsaya goşhu

., ., us, Indra, make us celebrated, rays of light,

ashveşhu shubhrişhu sahasreşhu tuvīmagha.

 

Details:

kundŗņāchi is a covert word, like gārdabha in the previous rik. This is a wild reptile of the lizard family. Her appearance in a home is an ill omen, it is said. This word kundŗņāchi indicates some special wicked force bringing evil. The purport is to let all wind that is unfavourable to us go to its natural habitation, the forest, along with the forest creature, kundŗņāchi.

 


MANTRA (1.29.7): DESTROY THE PANDEMONIUM

 

Destroy every kind of pandemonium;

Slay him who does harm;

Make us special among the rays of light,

The life-energies and the thousand fold auspiciousness, O opulent Indra.

 

sarvam parikrosham jahi

all, one which shouts everywhere, destroy,

jambhāyā kŗkadāshvam,

destroy, a harming force,

ā tū na indra shamsaya goşhu

ashveşhu shubhrişhu sahasreşhu tuvīmagha.
