Hymn 47: Beautiful Car with Abundant Gifts

Rişhi: Praskaņvaĥ Kāņvaĥ

 

MANTRA (1.47.1): DELIGHTFUL FELICITIES

 

O Increasers of Truth, the sweetest Soma has been pressed or poured yesterday;

O Ashvins, drink the Soma;

You bear the delightful felicities (or riches) for the giver.

 

ayam vām madhumattamaĥ sutaĥ soma ŗtāvŗdhā;

this, you, sweetest (Soma), poured or pressed, Soma, increasers of truth,

tam ashvinā pibatam tiroahnyam

that, Ashvins, drink, of yesterday,

dhattam ratnāni dāshuşhe.

bear, delightful felicities, giver.

 


MANTRA (1.47.2): SUPERB CHANT

 

In your beautiful car with three columns which is moving in the three worlds

Come here, O Ashvins;

The sons of Kaņva hymn you in the yajňa;

Listen to their superb chant.

 

tri vandhureņa trivŗtā supeshasā

three, columned, moving in the three worlds, with beautiful form,

rathenā yātam ashvinā;

by car, come, Ashvins,

kaņvāso vām brahma kŗņvanty adhvare

sons of Kaņva, you, mantra, do, in the yajňa,

teşhām su shŗņutam havam.

their, superb, hear, call.

 


MANTRA (1.47.3): COME TO US

 

O Ashvins, drink the sweetest Soma, O Increasers of Truth;

O Accomplishers, bearing the wealth in your car,

Come today near the sacrificer who gives.

 

ashvinā madhumattamampātam somam ŗtāvŗdhā;

Ashvins, sweetest, drink, Soma, increasers of truth,

atha adya dasrā vasu bibhratā

thus, today, accomplishers, wealth, bearing,

rathe dāshvāmsam upa gachchhatam.

in the car, to the sacrificer who gives, near, come.

 


MANTRA (1.47.4): KANVAS INVOKE YOU

 

O Omniscient Ones, seated on the prepared triple-seat,

Sprinkle our yajňa with the sweet sap;

The illustrious sons of Kaņva prepare the Soma

And invoke you, O Ashvins.

 

trişhadhasthe barhişhi vishvavedasā

seated in the triple-seat, prepared seat, omniscient,

madhvā yajňam mimikşhatam;

sweet sap, yajňa, sprinkle,

kaņvāso vām sutasomā

sons of Kaņva, you, with the prepared Soma,

abhidyavo yuvām havante ashvinā.

illustrious, you, calls, Ashvins.

 

Details:

triple seat: in the external ritual it is the thrice-heaped grass; in the inner context it refers to the three planes of matter, life and mind.

 


MANTRA (1.47.5): GUARD US

 

With those appropriate aids with which

You guarded Kaņva, O Ashvins,

Guard us also with the same, O Lords of bliss;

O Increasers of Truth, drink the Soma.

 

yābhiĥ kaņvam abhişhţibhiĥ

with those, Kaņva, appropriate aids or willings,

prāvatam yuvam ashvinā;

guard well, you, Ashvins,

tābhiĥ şhva smān avatam shubhaspatī

with those, well, us, guard, lords of bliss,

pātam somam ŗtāvŗdhā.

Details:

Ashvins are well-known as the lords of bliss.

 


MANTRA (1.47.6): WEALTH FROM THE OCEAN AND HEAVEN

 

O Accomplishers, to Sudāsa you brought the wealth

In abundance in your car, O Ashvins;

Likewise bear for us the wealth from the ocean,

Or the much-coveted wealth from the heaven.

 

sudāse dasrā vasu bibhratā

to Sudāsa, accomplishers, wealth, brought,

rathe pŗkşho vahatam ashvinā;

in the car, in abundance, carrying, Ashvins,

rayim samudrād uta vā

wealth, from the ocean, ., or,

divas pary asme dhattam purspŗham.

Details:

Sudāsa: one who gives in plenty, name of a sage.

 


MANTRA (1.47.7): COME TO US WHEREVER YOU ARE

 

O Ashvins, whether you are far (in the heaven)

Or close to the hero-worshipper,

You come to us in your car of happy movement,

Along with the Truth-Light of the Sun.

 

yan nāsatyā parāvati yad vā

whether, Ashvins, far (from here), whether, or,

stho adhi turvashe;

stay, (staying) close, to the hero-worshipper,

ato rathena suvŗtā na āgatam

either way, with your car, of happy movement, to us, come,

sākam sūryasya rashmibhiĥ.

along with, Sun, rays of.

 

Details:

Turvasha: In the Veda, it is the name of a rişhi. Symbolically it represents one who desires godliness and fights the enemies of Gods, i.e., a hero shining with the rays of consciousness or knowledge. Thus adhiturvashe means, "close to the hero-worshipper'; S. translates it as "one staying close' without specifying the meaning of turvasha.

 


MANTRA (1.47.8): IMPEL THE YAJAMANA

 

Let the steeds which serve the yajňa

Bring you here facing us to our yajňa-libation;

O Leaders, may you anoint with the right impulsions the yajamāna who does auspicious works and gives readily;

And take your place on the prepared sacred seat.

 

arvānchā vām saptayo adhvarashriyo

facing, you, steeds, (which) serve the yajňa or sacrifice,

vahantu savaned upa;

bring, for our yajňa or libation, here,

işham pŗnchantā sukŗte sudānava

impulsion, anoint, of auspicious works, who gives readily,

ā barhiĥ sīdatam narā.

., sacred seat, sit, leaders.

 

Details:

ā + sīdatam: take your place.

facing us: this phrase occurs in many verses indicating that the human seers perceive the Gods sitting facing them.

 


MANTRA (1.47.9): WEALTH TO THE GIVER

 

O Ashvins, you come in your Sun-clad car

In which you have always carried the wealth to the giver (of offerings);

Come to drink the sweet Soma.

 

tena nāsatyā gatam rathena sūryatvachā;

with that, Ashvins, come, car, Sun-clad,

yena shashvad ūhathur dāshuşhe vasu

with which (car), all the time, carry or bring, to the giver, wealth,

madhvaĥ somasya pītaye.

MANTRA (1.47.10): HOME OF KANVA

 

O Ever-affluent (Ashvins), for our increase,

We invoke you, facing you, ardently with chants and lauds of riks;

In the loved home of the Kaņva,

You have taken the Soma-drink, O Ashvins.

 

ukthebhir arvāg avase purūvasū

chants, facing you, for our increase, ever-affluent (Ashvins),

arkaish cha ni hvayāmahe;

with lauds of riks, and, continually or ardently, invite you,

shashvat kaņvānām sadasi priye

always, Kaņvas, home, loved,

hi kam somam papathur ashvinā.

Details:

The loved home of Kaņva is the subtle body of the rişhi.

hi kam: indicates emphasis on the action mentioned.
