Hymn 107: Gracious Gods

Rişhi: Kutsaĥ ˇngirasaĥ

 

MANTRA (1.107.1): GOOD THOUGHTS

 

May our yajňa go towards the Gods for their felicity;

May the Gods be gracious to us;

May your good thoughts be directed towards us;

Delivering us from sin, may these good thoughts grant great happiness to us.

 

yajňo devānām praty eti

our yajňa, for Gods, for, (may) go,

sumnam ādityāso bhavatā mŗļayantaĥ;

felicity, Gods, become, gracious,

ā vo arvāchī sumatir vavŗtyād amhosh chid yā

., you, towards us, good thoughts, directed towards us, sin, ., that (thoughts),

varivovittarā asat.

extend great happiness, may become.

 

Details:

Note that only good thoughts can prevent us from committing sins and deliver us from the effects of inharmonious actions. Recall the comments in (1.89.5).

ā + vāvŗtyād: become directed.

varivaĥ: happiness.

varivovittarā: extend the vast happiness (toward us).

 


MANTRA (1.107.2): GODS COME TO US

 

May the Gods come to us with their protection

Lauded by the Angirasa seers with Sāma chants;

May Indra with his special power, Maruts with their hosts,

And Aditi with all the Gods (her children) grant us happiness.

 

upa no devā avasā

., to us, gods, endowed with protection,

gamantv angirasām sāmabhiĥ stūyamānāĥ;

come, Angirasa seers, Sāma lauds, lauded by,

indra  indriyair maruto marudbhiĥ

Indra, with his powers, Maruts, with their power,

ādityair no aditiĥ sharma yamsat.

ˇdityas, us, Aditi, happiness, grant.

 

Details:

indriyaiĥ:  sign of Indra, the powers associated with Indra; the five senses in classical Sanskrit.

 


MANTRA (1.107.3): GRANT US HAPPINESS

 

May Indra of that type, Varuņa, Agni,

Aryamān and Savitŗ grant us all-round happiness;

May Mitra, Varuņa, Aditi

Heaven, Ocean and Earth grant us this.

 

tan na indras  tad varuņas tad agni

that, us, Indra, that, Varuņa, that, Agni,

tad aryamā tat savitā chano dhāt;

that, Aryamān, that, Savitŗ, all round happiness, grant,

tan no mitro varuņo māmahantām aditiĥ

that, us, Mitra, Varuņa, grant us, Aditi,

sindhuĥ pŗthivī uta dyauĥ.
